“Estimates of the Number of Transgender Groups in Ukraine”

The research is being implemented by SE “Center for Social Expertise named after Yu. Saenko” on request of the Ukrainian Center for Public Health Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

The purpose of the study is to assess the number of transgender groups in Ukraine at the national and regional levels.

Objectives of the study:

• Apply indicators of bio-behavior research among transgender people in Ukraine to determine the coefficients that will allow determination the estimated size of the transgender group in Ukraine.
• Organize the collection of statistical and other relevant information to be used to calculate the number of transgender groups in the regions and nationally.
• Calculate the estimated number of transgender groups at the regional and national levels.
• Harmonize estimates with the regional councils on TB and HIV / AIDS and with the Interdepartmental Working Group on Monitoring and Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Implementation of Programmatic Measures to Counteract HIV / AIDS, Tuberculosis and Other Socially Dangerous Diseases.

Methods of research: statistical, qualitative.

It is planned to conduct desk research for data collection and its secondary analysis (including the method of analysis of social networks), as well as in-depth interviews with experts and key informants (representatives of NGOs working with transgender people).

Geography of the study: 25 regional centers (with the exception of Luhansk, Donetsk and the Autonomous Republic of Crimea)

On October 13, 2020, the results of the project were presented to national level specialists, representatives of the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, regional research coordinators, and interested partners.

On November 5, 2020, project manager Olesya Trofymenko together with project expert Maksym Kasyanchuk presented the results of the study at the XIII National LGBTI Conference “Time of Constraints. The era of opportunities.
